Chairs require comfort, aesthetics, structural rigidity, production ease and good utilisation of material.  All these aspects attract me to chair design … they are a challenge.

I wanted to make a 3-legged chair that has the capacity for design flexibility.  The seat and legs are set whilst I can explore different back designs branching out from the central spine. 

Dining chairs are also usually viewed from their back, as they are pushed under a table, so a main consideration is their aesthetics from this aspect.

In this particular design, back arms branch out to give full seated back support.  Using through tenons, the back is strong whilst remaining aesthetically light.
